Happy birthday, Niamh!

Yesterday was a special day for Niamh, not only because it was her 8th birthday, but because it was the first time it had fallen on a school day! How exciting!

Dissecting flowers

What are the parts of a flower? Why are they important?

How much do we waste?

To finish our geography topic, we carried out a class investigation to find out how much waste each class produces.
Together we decided how we would investigate this, drew up a data collection table and, with gloves securely on, delved inside the bins!

Poetry

To introduce the new English topic we played a 'Speed poetry', a game somewhat like speed dating! The children moved around the classroom exploring different types of poetry and recording these.
Examples included; shape, limericks, riddles, acrostic, nursery rhymes, haikus, nonsense, narrative.

Throughout the week, the children have been playing around with different types, and have enjoyed following the rules to make up their own and performing them!

Check out some examples below:

Letters to the Mayor

As I'm sure you've heard, the children have composed letters to the new mayor of Bristol to persuade him to make Bristol an even greener city. Lots of great ideas, improvements and initiatives have been suggested including; reducing bus fares, introducing more recycling bins, enforcing severe litter fines, installing solar panelling on school buildings, protecting green space and introducing more conservation areas.

Following the persuasive letter writing steps to success, the class added facts and figures to support their points, as well as using powerful persuasive vocabulary, paragraphs, connectives and rhetorical questions.

We posted these today and eagerly wait for a response.....

Reduce, Reduce, Recycle!

Throughout the week we've been focusing on the 3 Rs, discussing the order we should follow these and the importance of this.

Reduce

Playing top trumps games to highlight the ways in which we can cut waste by choosing products with less packaging, or recyclable packaging.

Shadow puppet shows

In small groups the children performed their own show, using shadow puppets they made earlier in the week. They experimented with the light and puppets, making the shadows bigger and smaller as well as coming up with an interesting plot!

They were pretty interesting...

Dear Jack,

In role as The Giant from the fairytale, Jack and the beanstalk, the children have been writing their own letters of complaint. These were addressed to Jack of course, for he had made the giant extremely angry and upset for several reasons...

I was impressed to see all of the children had included most if not all of the steps to success, such as:
* correct letter layout
* formal/ forceful language
* a paragraph per point
* joining and extending connectives
* rhetorical questions
